ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE LAW UNION OF ONTARIO: May 8-9, 2015

 

Join us on Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, 2015, for the Law Union of Ontario’s Annual Conference! The Law Union of Ontario’s Annual Conference brings progressive legal and activist communities together to discuss an exciting and challenging series of pressing issues.

FRIDAY Location: The Friday night event will be held at Friends House from 6:30-8 p.m. The address is 60 Lowther Avenue, Toronto. Follow this link for a map of the exact location of the conference: http://www.torontoquakermeeting.org/contact.html

Accessibility: This facility is wheelchair accessible through the parking lot door (east side of the building through from the Bedford entrance).

SATURDAY Location: All plenaries and panels on Saturday will be held at The Ryerson Student Centre from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. The address is 55 Gould Street, Toronto. Follow this link for a map of the exact location of the Saturday conference: http://ryersonstudentcentre.ca/contact/directions

Accessibility: This facility is wheelchair accessible and childcare by an ECE-certified provider will be provided on Saturday ONLY. CART (Communication Access Real Time Translation) services will be provided for all plenaries and select panels.

CPD Accreditation: The Law Union Conference has been accredited for 30min Professionalism Content.  The Conference is also eligible for up to 9hr 15min Substantive Content.

Registration Fees: Suggested fees are:

$125 for lawyers/paralegals using the CPD hours

$50 for community members

$15 for Friday night panel only

TODAY: Press Conference on proposed “Community Engagement” policy

Today, community organizations and human rights groups will respond to and comment on the Toronto Police Services Board’s proposed Community Engagement Policy.

The press conference starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Sheraton Centre Hotel Toronto (123 Queen Street West, across from City Hall) in the Cedar Room.

Law Union of Ontario Submission to TPSB regarding the new “Community Engagement” Policy

At its public meeting of April 2, 2015, the Toronto Police Services Board considered oral deputations and written submissions responding to and commenting on its proposed Community Engagement Policy.  The Law Union of Ontario’s submission to the TPSB can be viewed here.

The Law Union of Ontario has a long history of engaging national security issues, practices and legislation, dating back to our inception in 1974 including making submissions to the McDonald Commission in 1978, the Senate Committee examining the original CSIS bill in 1983, the House Special Committee reviewing the CSIS Act and the new Security Offences Act in 1990, the House Sub-Committee on Public Safety and National Security in 2005 and the House Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security in 2013 on Bill S-7 to re-introduce preventative arrest and investigative hearings for terrorism offences.
